DRU-510A..and its firmware |
|
This is a great piece of kit up until the point when it blows its firmware. From that point forward it’s a door stop. The symptoms are a rapid Flashing LED and no response from soft or manual eject. You will also notice that the name has change to SONY BOOT DRU-510A. Apparently, if you upgrade to the latest firmware BEFORE the event you should be OK, I didn’t. It would be nice for Sony to actually acknowledge this failure and pre-warn registered users of the defect.

Sony DRU-510A Problem |
In mid 2003 I puchased a Sony DRU-510A DVD burner from the UK and at the end of 2003 I have now found a fault with it that a number of people have reported via different web sites.Having left a DVD-R burning in the device I returned to find the orange LED on the front of the burner was constantly flashing and that it would not manually eject or software command eject the DVD from the device. This is the same situation following a computer restart. The only apparent solution I have found is to have upgraded the DRU-510A firmware before the problem began but I do not believe you are likely to do this without knowing the problem exists before hand. As an additional point Sony Support have so far not returned any of my contacts regarding this problem. This is a reasonable product but be aware of problems with it that Sony do not appear to acknowledge.

Sony DVD Writer DRU-510A |

Arrived within a few days, item was new as stated, no problem there. Installed but I did have problems when writing to a CDW disc. Windows XP halted with a serious error which I could only recover from by powering off and re-booting. I contacted the seller (storagecompany) but there is only very limited technical support and it was suggested that I check with Sony myself. I resolved this only by going to the Sony web site which did identify the problem in their FAQ section and offered a solution. Bottom line, installed now and working ok despite the initial problems.
